DID YOU KNOW IRELAND HONORED FREDERICK DOUGLASS WITH A STATUE?
Frederick Douglass now has a permanent memorial in Belfast.
Hello, fellow travelers!
As we continue to celebrate Black History Month, we’ll bring you a bit of history you probably didn’t know - Black Travel History. For example, did you know Frederick Douglass traveled to Ireland in 1845?
He traveled the country delivering anti-slavery speeches. He described his experience as “transformative.” Last year, the city of Dublin erected a statue of the abolitionist.
“Frederick Douglass’s statue in the heart of Belfast is a reminder of the proud history of this city in opposing slavery and of the work still to be done”, said members of the Belfast City Council.
